This is one of Apple’s storage destinations — [Google Cloud](org:google cloud) — for user content uploaded to iCloud. User content includes the personal photos, videos, notes and files synced from users’ iPhones, iPads, Macs and Apple devices. This domain is used to download existing content to a user’s device.
Apple is making use of Cloud Storage (GCS) from Google Cloud. The "gcs-us-00002"
subdomain indicates the bucket to use, the name of which Apple chose. The label part "us"
means this is a bucket hosted in the United States, and "00002"
means this is their second bucket.
The GCS label is not required by Google because the storage subdomain above it already indicates GCS; but the GCS label is useful for Apple to make it identifiable.
In the industry, cloud storage buckets can be monumentally large and cloud providers readily support this scale. It is likely that Apple is choosing to partition storage across a number of buckets for their own technical reasons. It may also be for fault tolerance and redundancy. It is also possible that with countless objects hosted, Google has advised the use of multiple buckets, for efficiency and to maintain the health of their own platform. Google would not want their resources to be bottlenecked and imbalanced.
There is nothing in the bucket name to signify that this bucket is controlled by Apple. The name merely states that this is Google Cloud Storage (GCS) in an American location, and the second of its name. But we know this bucket is only used by Apple for hosting iCloud user content.
It is not immediately clear why Apple chose not to label their bucket with an Apple or iCloud identifier. It may be a layer of obfuscation. It may be that they do not want their brand associated with any of the content hosted therein for legal reasons. It is not Apple content; it is their users’ personal content, which Apple does not own, share or licence.
Presumably, it is the lack of Apple branding that required the use of five digits to create a bucket name which was unique and not already in use. It is unclear whether Apple has registered all 5-digit bucket combinations of this format to guard against cursory and malicious squatting and masquerading attacks. This would require 99,999 buckets to be registered, +1 if counting "00000"
. This is an enormous amount of resource allocation, that while could be programmatically managed, would require human oversight — and would fill out the views of all their buckets (potentially not just iCloud user content), and would be a lot to deal with.
This is a company-wide bucket naming policy for locations that host user content. For example, Apple uses this bucket naming style with their AWS S3 buckets that store iCloud user content.
